2009 Chrysler Aspen Hybrid


The Aspen is Chrysler's first foray into the world of sport utility vehicles. That's right: the storied company had never offered an SUV before, leaving that job to its sportier Dodge division.While the Aspen burst onto the scene fairly late, it now represents a quality alternative, especially in hybrid variant. Largely derived from the more plebian Dodge Durango, this Chrysler still managed to develop its own unique personality.

The 2009 Aspen boasts the same silhouette as the Durango but, like any true Chrysler vehicle, it also sports countless chrome accents. The goal is to stand out from the macho-looking Dodge by offering a classy, refined SUV.

Well, designers have hit the bull's eye. Every element that makes a great Chrysler is on the menu. Chrome is applied to the massive grille contour and thin horizontal slats, while the headlights integrate a subtle, downward-facing bulge. Completing the package is a set of 18-inch wheels and chrome mirrors.

Unfortunately, the rear section is a bit too plain. The taillights, in particular, could have used more distinctiveness; after all, the Aspen is a vehicle for people looking to make a statement.

The interior is nicely appointed, although refinement fails to impress. I found it too reminiscent of the Durango's cabin. Memo to Chrysler: it takes more than just faux wood inlays to create a luxury feel. While the company calls it "Madrona Burl woodgrain finish", the dashboard does look plasticky. Moreover, plastics used inside do not meet expectations for a so-called premium SUV. Virtually illegible, the analog clock at the top of the center stack is just another example of an ill-executed design.

The instrument cluster is just as difficult to read. The soft blue backlighting might be helpful during the day, but it's a different story at night. On a positive note, occupants will have an easy time climbing on board this big rig thanks to some pretty convenient running boards.
